A Stripey Rayon Jersey Hemlock

The holidays are finally in full swing! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving full of food, family, and fabric. 😉

I know most of you are probably bundled up in cozy sweaters but down here in Tucson we are still rocking the lighter garments. At least it’s finally boot weather!

And what better to go with jeans and boots than a spiffy striped top? When I first laid eyes on this striped rayon jersey, I fell in love. The stripes look hand-painted and I am totally digging the nonuniform look. Since it’s a very drapey fabric, a slouchy shirt was a must.

I used the trusty Grainline Hemlock Tee (free pattern!). It’s a one-size-fits-most pattern, so you don’t have to worry about figuring out which size to cut. I’ve made several variations of this so far, but had yet to play with stripes. I like how the dropped shoulder seam plays well with the stripes on the sleeves.

LOVE the look of these stripes!

I initially wanted this to be a shorter sleeved version, but I decided to keep this weird half-to-three-quarters length so the play on stripes was more noticeable. I think it helps balance the proportions of this shirt so it doesn’t look like I’m wearing a big striped bag.

Rayon jersey is super soft and, as I stated before, very drapey. So I wouldn’t suggest trying to make anything tailored in this! I also find it has good recovery so I don’t have a super bagged-out shirt by the end of the day. It’s also fairly easy to sew as I didn’t notice any curly edges. There was not a whole lot of fabric fighting and wrestling going on. Sweet!

Although winter is right around the corner, I probably wouldn’t suggest rayon jersey if you’re looking to stay super warm. It’s a great spring/summer/fall fabric… unless you’re in the desert like me, then it’s great all year long!

YEEEEAAAHHHH!

I hope you all are staying warm/cool/whatever goes in your corner of the world!

  1. The fabric is too cute. I agree with you the non-uniform look is really nice. Super cozy looking. Good for airing out in the summer and covering arms in the “winter”.

    1. Thank you! I can’t wait til the weather warms up so I can bust this shirt out again! I looove it. (OK, maybe I CAN wait for warmer weather because cool weather is so scarce here!)
