Chambray Tops for Summer

I was so excited at the Chambray Week theme because it’s exactly what my summer wardrobe needed – two new chambray tops to wear with white jeans. Now only if Summer would show up sooner – the winter cold seems to not be going away!

I am totally a top and jeans kind of girl – so when I was brainstorming for Chambray week – I kept getting drawn to Chambray Tees and Tops. I settled on sewing up the Key Largo Top from Hey June and the Coram Top from Allie Olsen for Indie Sew.

The Key Largo Top from Hey June is an awesome woven t-shirt pattern with a couple different options to customize the woven tee. It features an option for a tie front hem and an option of a traditional straight hem. It also offers the option to cut the front piece on the bias. Also for those newbie sewists out there – it would be an excellent first garment project!

I chose to sew up the tie front version as I really had nothing like it in my closet! This micro lined chambray was a fun option to cut on the bias as it’s not overly busy but adds some really cute detail to the front shirt! I used the chambray to make my own bias take for the front neckband too.

The Coram Top is a raglan style boxy tee with a really awesome shoulder dart that adds beautiful shaping to the sleeve. The Coram Top also has a shirt tail hem and an option for a dress as well.

I’ve been loving raglans recently and thought the Coram Top would be fun in a traditional chambray. I only had 2 yards of 44” wide fabric which was a super tight fit – but it fit! I was definitely playing fabric chicken – but I won!

The two chambrays I chose each had a little bit of a different hand. The microstripe that I made my Key Largo out of was a bit more substantial which made a great choice for the Key Largo with the knotted bottom. It also made sewing up the bias binding neckline and hem facing a breeze because the fabric was nice and cooperative. The fabric I used for the Coram Top was a little more light weight which was a perfect match for the beautiful curved hem of this top.

Summer is such a fun time to sew up all those chambray tops – I love pairing mine with a pair of white jeans and a fun statement necklace – to me, not much more screams summer to me than white jeans!

Happy Chambray Week and happy sewing!
