Fall means French Terry!

sloane2

As soon as the nights start to get the tiniest bit of a chill to them I start to get itching for fall.  Fall is by far my favorite season and easily my favorite season to sew for.  I love cozy sweaters, fun hoodies, and comfy joggers.  It also means it’s totally acceptable to wear soft french terry everyday!

Cali Fabrics has a great selection of french terry and I immediately gravitated to this gorgeous poly/rayon/lycra light mauve beauty.  I seriously can’t get enough of this pretty shade.  It’s everywhere for fall and I’m not so shamelessly filling my closets with it.  I really like this particular shade too- it’s not too pastel-y and totally works for fall.

I’d been wanting a slouchy sweatshirt but always worry that slouchy= sloppy looking.  The Love Notions Sloane Sweater was exactly what I was hoping for- A relaxed fit that still looks pulled together.  I’d made this sweater a couple times before in heavier weight french terry and the look is totally different.  It’s still cute but more boxy and casual looking.  This fabric blend drapes beautifully and gives the pattern a little more dressy feel.

This pattern has two views- view A with a contrasting yoke, curved hem and slimmer silhouette and view B with standard sweatshirt styling, boxy fit, and banded hem.  For this version I did view B but used the contrasting yoke piece from view A.  I also added my standard 1″ to the body and sleeves for my height (I’m 5’7″).  I honestly struggled with adding a contrasting fabric to the yoke.  I love that you can use a woven for that piece and that opens so many possibilities.  I was thinking lace or chambray, even a little leather would have been fun.  In the end I really wanted this pretty fabric to shine.  I added a tiny lace trim to the yoke seam and love the little detail it adds.  I’ve found I usually fall in love with fun prints and lots of pattern mixing but in the end I always gravitate to the simple solid pieces in my closet.  Tell me I’m not the only one who does this?!  Pretty fabrics get me everytime!  Luckily this time it’s a pretty color that won my heart so I know it will get worn constantly.

I’ve got a lovely stack of french terry just waiting for me.  It’s so easy to sew and is just too darn comfy!  Have you started your fall sewing yet?  Make sure to pick up some pretty french terry to get you going!
