If you wore the trend the first time around, can you wear it again?
Have you heard the rule going around that if you wore a trend the first time, you shouldn’t wear it when it comes back in style? Well, I’m tossing out that fashion rule, just like “horizontal stripes make you look fat” and “no white after Labor Day”. Let’s wear whatever we want!
I just couldn’t resist this neon pink Liverpool knit from Cali Fabrics! I’m an 80’s baby, so neon was popular when I was in Elementary school, just as I was starting to pay attention to what other kids wore. Neon is just so HAPPY!
Even though this fabric is currently sold out, Cali often has a range of neon Liverpool knits, like these coral, pink and yellow options, or if you like the idea of a plaid but want more subdued tones, there’s a great navy houndstooth right now! I love Liverpool for semi-fitted tank dresses like this, because as a double-knit it was enough body to skim and not cling.
When I first planned how to style this dress, I tried to tone it down with denim and navy marl sneakers… but really, that’s like trying to make a unicorn into a horse. Let the dress shine!
Did you notice that I used a bit of white Liverpool as contrast arm bands? I thought it would be fun to order some solid white and solid black to mix and match with my growing collection of Liverpool print scraps. You’ll see more of that in my next post!
What styles from your childhood or teens do you have a soft spot for? Would you wear them again?
I usually try to avoid the 80s looks myself, living through that as a kid was enough. 😂 The 90s were much more fun for me fashion-wise, as I was a teen and sewing by then. I still haven’t gotten over the love for rayon challis and flared jeans that came from that era. I want bootcuts to come back! (And fully intend to sew a pair when I can.)
I think bootcut IS back! At least, it seems to be with people who pay attention to fashion. I can’t say I’ve seen a single pair IRL! 😉

I agree to throw that rule out. I think we should dress according to our body type. That dress looks so good on you and fits you perfectly! I’ve made a few pair of high waist, wide leg jeans. I wore the style in Jr High; and it looks good on me now. You definitely rock a neon.
Yes, I have heard that statment and totally disavow it. I wore overalls all the time right up to when I was pregnant in 1994, was (so sad when they went out of style) and I intend to wear them now too!
Love it! So fun! Like Becky, I am a 90’s lover too. Although, I have been growing more and more in love with some 80’s fashion thanks to Stranger Things.
I will hang on to the rule of not wearing white bottoms (pants, skirts, or dresses) after Labor Day;.white tops are fine year round. That’s what my mom taught me, and I think it is a good one! Haha.
Otherwise, who cares if you were around the first time a trend moved through? I’m with you, wear what you like. I’m at an age where I really don’t care what others think.

Depends on if I like the style and feel I can wear it a second (or third) time around. With that said, I guess I will break the ‘rules’ if it suits me. I came through school in the 60’s and early 70’s so I have seen a few cycles of styles, some good and some not so good.
