I’ve Never Been So Comfortable

I’m back with my next post for the Cali Fabrics blog and today I want to talk to you all about this incredibly soft organic cotton and bamboo French Terry I ordered recently.IMG_0427

Guys. It is so soft. Like stroking a chinchilla, it’s that soft. It is a really beautiful lavender-grey tone. The knit is a lightweight French Terry. It’s a little too heavy for t-shirts (unless you need thicker layers, in which case, this would be perfect) but it is weighty enough to be a stable knit to sew sweaters or even pyjamas or joggers with.

I’ve never used organic material before. With the increasing awareness of fast fashion and it’s impact on the environment, it was really nice to find an organic fabric at an incredibly reasonable price point. The quality is really really great and I have my eye on the white on white stripe organic bamboo cotton jersey Cali Fabrics currently has – perfect for a light summer tee or as an autumnal layering piece maybe?

IMG_0472I made a hoodie with the 3 yards I ordered, using KwikSew 3678. I have this memory of a few months ago talking about making clothes and telling a friend “oh I’ll never bother making a hoodie, seems pointless when I can buy one cheap” but the more I thought about it the more I realised how regularly I wear one, so when this fabric arrived I knew immediately that a hoodie was the right choice! I made view A and used a white zip – I didn’t want to colour match and the white really brightens the blue-grey colour.

I made this hoodie predominantly on my regular machine, as indicated on the pattern instructions, although I did overlock the main seams and any exposed edges. The instructions for the pattern were really clear and easy to

follow – this was my first exposure to KwikSew and I was pleasantly surprised! I do however need to invest in a walking foot – I didn’t use one on this project but it would have helped sewing over the slightly bulky seam sections. Also, on a side note, if you are looking to colour match your thread, Gutermann colour 593 is a perfect match with this French Terry!

I am so pleased with this make. As I have mentioned before I am a little on the short side but I chose to leave all the extra length in the body and sleeves as I don’t like my hoodies and sweaters to be too cropped. The weight of the fabric makes this a really great piece to wear all year round – light enough for a summer cover-up but warm enough, as well as thin enough, to be a great layering piece in the winter months.

  1. That hoodie does look super comfortable. And good timing – that Kwik sew pattern is on sale today, and it’s just the pattern I’ve been looking for!

  2. Your hoodie does look so comfortable! I find myself in the same frame of mind often – should I make it when I can buy it so easily if not less expensive at least the same cost as making it?! But then you make it and you realize you would NEVER in a million years find such a garment in RTW due to the fit in all the right places, colour and type of fabric you like to feel against your skin. You’ll wear this for years with pride in your heart 🙂

  3. I love your new sweatshirt! Thank you for sharing this pattern and fabric. I love the Fabric Outlet and I hope to find this fabric the next time I’m there. I’m looking forward to seeing your next make!
