Rayon Tops for Summer

My summer wardrobe consists of anything that I can pair with a pair of white jeans! I am on a kick of making all the rayon tops and when I saw this beautiful rayon gauze, I couldn’t pass up making a Harmony Blouse from Love Notions.

I had never sewn with a rayon gauze before. It has the drape and structure of a rayon, but features a “crinkly” texture to it. While normal rayon is shifty, this fabric required extra attention and ironing prior to sewing. You want to make sure you’re accurate as possible with your cutting any sort of rayon because it shifts so easily!  After giving it a good pressing prior to sewing, it was smooth sailing from there.

I love the print on this fabric. It’s a little outside my normal floral comfort zone, but the repeats on the pattern made for an extra fun top. I took the time to stripe match as well which I think was well worth it.

I sewed up the Harmony Blouse from Love Notions which is becoming one of my favorite woven tops. It is really perfect for rayons because of the drape that the pattern is drafted for. I chose to sew up the flutter sleeves (my favorite!) and omitted the key hole closure but kept the center back seam to allow for the shaping that the pattern includes. I do think I could have easily sized down, but I like the way the pattern lays with a bit of ease so I was happy with how it turned out.

The pattern includes a bias bound neckline and I was not sure how the rayon gauze would work with the bias tape but it was perfect! It totally cooperated which was a success.

As we’re heading into the warm summer months, rayon is an amazing choice for fabric to use for a woven top. Even the two tops I made for Chambray Week would be beautiful in a rayon as well! What is your favorite top for summer?
