Statement Sleeve Sweater for Spring

Anyone else over the cold and dreaming of spring?  Our winter here in Utah was unseasonable warm through most of January and February and I think Mother Nature is making up for it with snow storms and cold temps for the last two weeks.  I’m so ready for sunshine and blossoms!

To help beat those end of winter blues, I’m doing some transitional sewing with pieces that work well layered now and into the warmer weather.  This Confetti Dot  sweater is just perfect!

The shop is full of sweater knits and this fun speckled knit was just too fun to pass up.  It’s lightweight which makes it a great layering piece.  It’d work well for your favorite cardigan pattern too!  I love the bright primary colors and think it’s such a wearable fabric.  It looks great with a fun vibrant print or your staple jeans as well.

For this sweater I used the Starry Night pattern from Striped Swallow Designs.  Good news for all you ladies, there’s a women’s version too!  I love to try out trends on my kids first before I jump in and now I’m ready to make my own version.  Those sleeves are so cute!

I made a couple changes to the pattern.  I altered the sleeves a bit and I love the results.  I wanted an extra wide cuff so I chopped 3″ off the sleeve length and did a 12″ cuff (folded in half so it’s 6″).    The fabric doesn’t have a ton of recovery so the wide cuff actually works great.

I love the fullness of the sleeve.  Not too over the top!  Are you over the statement sleeves or still loving them like us?  I’m not a huge fan of the overly dramatic sleeves, mostly because I find them not practical to wear and we’re all about practicality!  This sleeve is just right for me.  A bit of puff but the cuff makes it totally wearable.

I chopped two inches off the length and widened the bottom band as well.  I just prefer wider bands and it’s such an easy alteration.  It’s little things that really make a pattern suit our style.  It’s why we sew, right?!

I’m kinda coveting this whole outfit but man I couldn’t bring that kind of sass to it!  I’m loving watching my kids style blossom and love being able to help it come to life.  We love browsing the Cali site and picking our favorites.  This little miss has some Donuts just waiting to be sewn up for some dancewear.  No matter what our needs, we can find it on Cali!
